ASEM-ASEM BUNCIS / SWEET AND SOUR BEANS

I saw this recipe a lot in Indonesia Woman's magazines. For a long time I wanted to try this and only got the opportunity to do so recently.

This food called Asem-Asem Buncis. Asem-asem means sour while Buncis means bean. Actually this food is not that sour, since the sour taste is solely comes from the tomato and it has a sweet taste from sweet soy sauce and the hot taste from chilies.

Since we are fasting and I already made rendang which is hot and spicy, I modified the recipe by not adding any chilies instead I just blended the tomato with shallots and garlic, saute it with the necessary seasoning. I added corn, cauliflower, beans, tomatoes and beef slices. A wonderful way of serving vegetables, I love the soup, sweet and sourish.

INGREDIENTS
200 gr beans, angle sliced
500 gr beef gulash, cut into small cube (as desired)
2 cups of beef broth (from boiling the meat)
1/4 cauliflower cut into floret
1 corn halved and further cut into 3
1 fresh tomato thinly sliced
4 Indonesian bay leaves (daun salam)**
4 tbsp Indonesian sweet soy sauce
Lime juice from one slice lime
Salt to taste
Cooking oil for sautéing

Ingredients to blend

5 small red onion (bawang merah), finely sliced*
3 cloves of garlic, finely sliced
2 tomatoes

Blend all  into wet paste

PREPARATIONS

  1. Boil the meat until soft. Set aside and keep the water.
  2. Heat oil in a wok pan. Sauté blended paste.
  3. Add bay leaves, until fragrant.
  4. Add corn stir fry for a while.
  5. Add beef, cook by stirring for a minute.
  6. Pour into beef broth. Season with sweet soy sauce, salt and lime juice, mix well. Adjust the taste until it tastes sweet and sour.Bring to a boil over small heat until the corn is enough soft.
  7. Add in cauliflower and beans Simmer until both are done.
  8. Sprinkle with fried onion, mix well and remove from the heat.
  9. Serve with steamed rice.
