This is a classic Malay dish. Pan fried fish with sambal. The fish is evenly coated with turmeric powder and salts and deep fry till golden brown. The sambal was prepared separately and is either topped on the fish or coated with the fish. Simple and easy to prepare and of course heavenly delicious!!!

The beauty of this dish, is that you can prepare the sambal in advance, store in the fridge, reheat when required.


5 fresh make,clean,remove scale and gills,cut into with head attached
1 tbsp salt
1 tsp turmeric powder

Sambal Belacan Sauce :

10 fresh hot long red chili 
2 onions
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp chicken cubes

Blend all ingredients to form wet paste and set aside


  1. Clean the Kembung fish and rub some salt and turmeric powder on it.
  2. Heat enough oil in saucepan deep fry the fish.
  3. Fry the fish over high flame until light golden brown. Turn the fish over to fry the other side.
  4. Dish out the fish.
  5. Heat up 5 tbsp oil and saute the sambal till fragrant. Add salts, chicken cubes and continue frying until sambals are done.
  6. Spread the sambal chilli over the fish and serve with white rice.


Masakan kelasik yang selalu menjadi penyelamat kalau udah buntu memikirkan apa yang hendak dimasak. Mudah sedap dan berbagai jenis ikan boleh digunakan. Sajian ini cukup menyelerakan walaupun simple.
